Football: Late Goals Lead To Heavy Defeat

Barclay Viewforth United 1 Bristo 5

A frustrating pair of late goals at South Gyle on Saturday 29th August turned a 5:1 defeat into the category of a “thrashing” which was unrepresentative of the match as a whole.

True, the league champions had hit the woodwork twice at 2:1 and certainly merited taking the three points, but Barclay had genuinely been in the ascendancy during significant periods of this match, not least in the period either side of Axel’s early well taken goal following a pass from Billy and some sterling work across the park.

Barclay manager Andrew Stephenson praised his side’s early enterprise, saying “There were times in the first half when our shape was really good, the passing crisp and inventive and we were genuinely unfortunate not to take more than a one goal lead before Bristo pegged us back. Going in level at half time it was nevertheless the case that the game had turned in Bristo’s favour, and we never got it back”.

So, no dream start against the champs but nevertheless some encouraging signs building on the win against Shandon.
